Gratitude

Tis the season to be thankful but more importantly, I think, is to be grateful.
There is a distinction between thankfulness and gratitude.
Yes, both words are related concepts but they have subtle differences:
Thankfulness is often a momentary emotion in response to specific things/circumstances.
Gratitude is a deeper emotional association that lasts over time.
So, that being said, I want to be more intentional in practicing gratitude.
I know many of us sometimes tend to focus on the negative things we face in life.
Instead of complaining, how about we concentrate on things we are grateful for.
If it helps, make a list.

Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances.” I know, there is the word ‘thanks’, but I believe it has a deeper meaning. Paul suffered severe persecution but despite his circumstances he was still able to be grateful to God. He knew that his treasures in Jesus far outweighed any earthly discomfort.

Sometimes we/I don’t see glory in tragic situations but we can still praise God because we know He is there. We can praise God for who He is and we can thank him (show gratitude) for what He has done. In doing this, your mindset of Him grows larger and your troubles/challenges grow smaller.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)
