Servant Songs

I have been studying through the book of Isaiah recently, and in chapter 50:4-9 is the third of four “Servant Songs” that specifically refer to the Messiah. All of these verses struck me as profound in different ways, but I simply want to direct our attention to verse 4:

“The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.”

This Servant (the Messiah), written about by Isaiah roughly 400 years before Jesus is born, is prophesied to be able to handle to the word of God in a scholarly and powerful way that impacts those who hear. We see this fulfilled in extravagant detail through Jesus as he heals countless diseases on those who are “weary”. Jesus also fulfilled this by refuting the “scholarly” religious leaders of his day, leaving them speechless time and time again.

A large part of the reason Jesus was able to do this was that morning after morning he awoke with an ear directed to God the Father and was taught by Him in their time of intimate communion. This is evidenced by the gospel writers making note of several different times when Jesus slipped away in the morning to be with the Father.

When I examine my own life as an ambassador of Christ, how clearly is this reflected in me? Are my words filled with the power of God that radically impacts those who hear it? Why not? Is it because I am not imitating Jesus by spending time with the Father each morning to allow him to shape and mold me into who He is fashioning me to be?

This is an example of how these words from Isaiah have been impacting me personally. I hope they have a similar effect on you as well. God bless!
